AG gets $20,000 fine out of Guardian

The Guardian Life Insurance Co. has agreed to pay the Commonwealth of Massachusetts $20,000 to settle charges that it had failed to provide health benefits required by state law.

The complaint and consent judgment was filed by Attorney General Martha Coakley’s office in Suffolk Superior Court. It alleges that Guardian “committed unfair or deceptive acts when it sold health insurance policies that violated the state’s mandated benefits laws,” according to a press release from the AG.

The Guardian settlement comes two months after Coakley settled cases against two other insurers: Time Insurance Co. and Union Security Insurance Co. The AG’s office also recently settled similar issues with Fallon Community Health Plan, GenWorth Life and Health Insurance Co., Harvard Pilgrim Health Care, John Alden Life Insurance CO., New England Life Insurance Co. and UniCare Health and Life Insurance Co.
