American Superconductor To Upgrade NYC Grid

Devens-based energy technology company American Superconductor Corp. has received a contract worth up to $25 million from the Department of Homeland Security to help develop new technology for Manhattan's power delivery network, the company said.

The contract is a continuation of Project HYDRA, begun last May, that promises to deliver up to 10 times more power through Manhattan's existing grid while also suppressing power surges and increasing system redundancy.

Terms of the deal stipulate that the Department of Homeland Security will provide up to $25 million in funding for the $39 million project. To date, $3.8 million has been provided by the DHS.

Upcoming milestones for the project include the manufacture and testing of a 50-meter prototype high temperature superconductor cable this year, the development of which is a critical component of the project. By 2010, a full-scale, 300-meter advanced cable system is expected to connect two of Con Edison's Manhattan substations. In all, the total system is expected to require 150,000 meters of the advanced cable.
