Baker supports protections for pregnant workers

File photo Gov. Charlie Baker said in a radio interview said he'd sign a bill giving pregnant workers certain accommodations.

Gov. Charlie Baker expects that he would sign a bill granting protections to pregnant workers, he said in a radio interview.

Nearly 120 lawmakers have signed on to a bill that would offer pregnant women certain accommodations.

The bill specifies "more frequent or longer paid or unpaid breaks, time off to recover from childbirth with or without pay, acquisition or modification of equipment, seating, temporary transfer to a less strenuous or hazardous position, job restructuring, light duty, break time and private non-bathroom space for expressing breast milk, assistance with manual labor, or modified work schedules" as long as the accommodation "would not impose undue hardship on the employer."

Momentum has been building behind the so-called Pregnant Workers Fairness Act, which has bipartisan support in both branches and the backing of House Speaker Robert DeLeo. Baker said on Herald Radio Wednesday that he expects a version of it to pass.

"I generally support the concept behind this bill and think it's a good idea, and I believe most folks in the Legislature do," said Baker, who sometimes opts against commenting on bills. "And I fully expect that at some point they'll be enacting a bill on that, and I'll be signing it, and it'll be a good thing."

The Labor and Workforce Development Committee held a hearing on the bill on Tuesday.
