Bay State Poverty Rate, Income Stable In 2009

The state's poverty rate was 10.3 percent in 2009, virtually unchanged from the 10.1-percent rate reported the previous year, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

Massachusetts' median household income of $64,081 in 2009 also declined by a statistically insignificant 1.3 percent from the prior year, the Census Bureau said. The nationwide median household income declined by 2.9 percent.

Only Maryland, New Jersey, Connecticut, Alaska and Hawaii had higher median household incomes in 2009.
