Worcester Polytechnic Institute President and CEO Dennis D. Berkey and his wife Catherine are making a $100,000 charitable gift to the university to be used by future WPI presidents.
The gift establishes the Dennis and Catherine Berkey President's Discretionary Fund, which will allow future WPI presidents "to provide both strategic and spontaneous support for promising programs and initiatives," the university said.
In a statement, Berkey said he wanted to establish the fund as a way to encourage future presidents to give unexpected recognition or reward to faculty and students, sponsor conference attendance or host visiting speakers. He said the fund will serve as a reminder that "often it is the small gesture that has the greatest impact."
Berkey was appointed president of WPI in 2004. The award winning teacher and mathematics textbook author has worked in higher education for more than 30 years.
