The USDA is urging contractors that do business in the Worcester area to attend trainings next week to learn about procedures to contain the Asian Longhorned Beetle infestation.
Companies doing business in the area that is quarantined to contain the beetles will learn about appropriate handling of wood products from the area and disposal of the beetles' host material. The USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service is also calling on the companies to enter compliance agreements with the federal and state governments to protect against the infestation.
Two of the free workshops will be held next week, on Wednesday, Sept. 10 from 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturday, Sept. 13 from 9 to 11 a.m. at Worcester Technical High School, located at 1 Skyline Drive in Worcester.
The quarantined area encompasses 33 miles in northern Worcester, Boylston, Holden, Shrewsbury and West Boylston. It may expand as more of the beetles are found. Authorities urge anyone who sees signs of the beetles to call 508-799-8330.
