Bureau wins better government award

For the second time in the last 10 years, the Research Bureau has won an award in the Pioneer Institute's Better Government Competition.

The Worcester-based organization will be presented with the award at a dinner tonight at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Boston, where Gov. Deval Patrick is set to be the featured speaker.

The Bureau's winning entry was for its ComNET (Computerized Neighborhood Environmental Tracking) neighborhood surveys. ComNET is a tool for bringing together citizens and technology to identify and resolve physical problems of Worcester's most under-served neighborhoods.

Using handheld computers and digital cameras, teams of Worcester residents and Holy Cross college students have systematically documented more than 11,000 deficiencies on neighborhood streets, sidewalks, and properties since 2001. Municipal agencies and neighborhood associations have been able to resolve two-thirds of problems identified, improving the quality of life in Worcester's neighborhoods, the bureau said.
