The Associated Industries of Massachusetts Business Confidence Index gained nearly two points in September on its way to its sixth increase in the last seven months.
September's score was 42.4, still below the neutral 50 mark, but AIM said "employers are clearly beginning to regain confidence."
The index's average monthly reading for the third quarter was 41, up from 37.5 in the second quarter and 34.5 in the first quarter. The index reached an all-time low of 33.3 in February.
The AIM Current Index increased by 1.4 points to 38 during the month and the Future Index gained 2.7 points to end September at 47.2. The disparity between the two indicates that "employers expect continued improvement over the next two quarters, but not a definitive end to the recession," AIM said.
