Central Mass. Cities Pitch Development Opportunities In Boston

Development and government officials from Worcester, Fitchburg and Leominster are in Boston making the case this morning that development opportunities in their cities should receive federal stimulus money.

The Massachusetts Development Finance Agency and the National Association of Industrial and Office Properties are putting on the event at the Hyatt Regency Boston. The event is an update on the state's plan to boost development beyond Route 128.

The two organizations asked the state's so-called "gateway cities": Worcester, Fitchburg, Leominster, Brockton, Fall River, Haverhill, Holyoke, Lawrence, Lowell, New Bedford, Pittsfield and Springfield, to present officials with "shovel ready" development opportunities that may qualify for federal stimulus money.

Tim McGourthy, Worcester's economic development director, said he and other city development officials would present MassDevelopment with every developable property in the city, but would highlight only the best ones, including Gateway Park, CitySquare, the giant 1.4 million-square-foot manufacturing building at 150 Blackstone River Rd., an R&D facility at 55-57 Union St., a 234,000-square-foot manufacturing building at 60 Fremont St. and the Worcester Business Center at 67 Millbrook St.

McGourthy said the city chose to showcase those properties because they present "near term opportunities for either development or tenancy."

MassDevelopment officials and Young Park, president of Berkeley Investments of Boston, the developer of the stalled CitySquare development in downtown Worcester, are expected to speak at the event about development challenges outside Route 128.
