Four Central Massachusetts communities will receive electric vehicle charging stations, under a round of funding announced this morning by the state Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs.
Worcester, Hopkinton, Athol and Lancaster are four of the 25 cities and towns in the state that will receive the stations, which allow electric vehicle owners to recharge their car batteries.
It has not been announced exactly where the stations will be installed in those communities, but the EOEEA said that they will generally be sited on or near downtown streets, parking garages, shopping malls, schools and colleges, and commercial, medical and industrial parks.
The state also plans to install charging stations in parking lots at Logan airport and at MBTA commuter stations.
The stations will be funded in part by a $280,000 settlement obtained by Attorney General Martha Coakley's office in 2007 for alleged pollution control equipment violations by an Ohio-based power plant.
The state leveraged that funding through a partnership with a California-based company, which received a federal stimulus grant to install the stations.
