Central Mass. restaurants expected to lead job growth in 2022

Hospitality-related industries are projected to experience more growth than any other sector in Central Massachusetts between 2020 and 2022, according to data from the Massachusetts Department of Labor & Workforce Development, compiled by the WBJ Research Department.

Arts, entertainment, and recreation are expected to experience the greatest growth by employment, increasing by 1,515 jobs over two years for an overall growth rate of 115.21%. Accommodation, including hotels, are expected to experience the second-greatest growth by employment, increasing by 633 jobs for a growth rate of 113.85%.

By pure number of jobs added, accommodation and food services is expected to grow faster than any other industry. If the DLWD projections take place, that industry will gain 7,134 jobs over the two year period, for a growth rate of 57.1%.

Most of the highest-growing industries, whether by percentage or absolute growth, are in sectors hardest hit by the coronavirus pandemic, which walloped restaurants, entertainment, and travel sectors.

Back in 2019, before the pandemic, technology and health care jobs represented the fastest-growing sectors in Massachusetts, another indication of how the pandemic has upended and reshaped the state’s economy.
