CEO Turnover Hits Lowest Level in 5 Years

Fewer CEOs left their jobs in 2009 compared to any of the five previous years, according to staffing consultant Challenger, Gray & Christmas.

Turnover for CEOs fell to 1,227 in 2009, the lowest level since 2004. That figure is 17 percent lower than 2008's total.

The health care industry saw the highest turnover, with 203 changes in 2009, down from 285 in 2008.

The government and non-profit sector saw the second highest rate of turnovers, followed by the financial and technology industries.

Most CEOs left via "resignation," Challenger found, with only 15 CEOs getting fired during the calendar year.
