An annual study of major embezzlement cases from Marquet International Ltd. of Boston has found that, among other trends, employees in companies' accounting and finance department are most likely to steal money.
It also found that women are more likely than men to embezzle.
According to the study, the financial services industry suffers the greatest losses from embezzlement. The average embezzlement loss during 2009 was $1 million. The median loss was $386,500.
More than 60 percent of incidents involved female perpetrators, but male perpetrators embezzled nearly twice as much as women.
Two thirds of incidents were carried out by employees in finance and accounting positions. The average scheme was carried out for more than 4 years.
Marquet is a corporate investigation, due diligence, litigation and security consulting firm. It releases the Marquet Report on Embezzlement annually. It examined 415 cases in which more than $100,000 in losses had been reported active in 2009.
