Charity CEOs Earn $770M

The top executives of the country's biggest charity organizations got a 2.5 percent raise this year, and charity executives in the Northeast made out especially well, according to Charity Navigator.

In its annual CEO compensation study, Charity Navigator found that while the executives of the country's top charities will rake in nearly $770 million this year, CEO compensation accounts for only 3.3 percent of the average charity's total spending. The average pay for a charity CEO in the Northeast is $184,244. In the mid-Atlantic, the average charity CEO makes $156,479.

CEOs of education, arts, culture and humanities charities make more than the average while the CEOs of religion, animal, environmental, human services and international charities make below the average.

Charity Navigator notes that hefty pay packages often come with great responsibility and that potential donors should be skeptical of charities that pay their executives nothing or that give their executives loans.

Charity Navigator's report is based on a survey of 5,324 U.S. charities.
