Consolidation, layoffs at Ethan Allen

Danbury-based Ethan Allen Interiors Inc. announced this morning a plan to consolidate the operations of roughly 12 of its retail design centers and two service centers that could mean layoffs of about 80 employees.

The goal of the consolidation is to improve operating profits by more than $3 million annually starting in fiscal year 2009. Of the 175 full- and part-time employees affected by the decision, about half are expected to transfer to other Ethan Allen centers.

Ethan Allen plans to consolidate two design centers in Manhattan and one in Queens into one new flagship center in New York City on Third Avenue that is expected to open in May.

With details still in the works, the company will not comment on changes or layoffs in Connecticut.
