Devens Prison Renews UMass Health Contract

The Federal Bureau of Prisons has awarded a five-year contract worth approximately $12 million per year to UMass Medical School (UMMS), the school announced.

Under the contract, UMass will continue coordinating health care services for 1,100 inmates at the Federal Medical Center in Devens. UMass has been providing those services since 2001.

Work under the renewed contract began this month.

UMMS will coordinate both inpatient and outpatient health services and will partner with HealthAlliance Hospital in Leominster, UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester and Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital in Boston.

In July, the prison bureau awarded a contract to UMMS for similar services for a facility in North Carolina. The medical school’s correctional health division also manages care at all 17 state prisons in Massachusetts.
