Diabetes Researcher From NIH Joins UMass

The University of Massachusetts Medical School and UMass Memorial Medical Center have hired David M. Harlan, a leading diabetes researcher.

Harlan will act as director of the Diabetes Center of Excellence, division chief of Diabetes and associate director of the UMMS Diabetes and Endocrinology Research Center.

Harlan is now the diabetes branch chief at the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases of the National Institutes of Health. He will start his work at the medical school and medical center in December.

In his new position, Harlan will develop clinical and research strategies for the Diabetes Center and manage patient programs.

Harlan has a bachelor's degree from the University of Michigan and a medical degree from Duke University. He completed his internship and internal medicine residency, as well as a fellowship in endocrinology, at Duke University Medical Center.
