The Boston Gas Co., Essex Gas Co. and Colonial Gas Co., which do business as National Grid asked for rate increases six months ago. In its decision earlier this week, DPU cut the Boston Gas Co. and Essex Gas Co. request by $36 million, or 46 percent.

The last rate increase for Boston Gas was in 2003. The last increases for Essex and Colonial were in 1996 and 1993, respectively.
The DPU also approved National Grid's proposed "decoupling" mechanism, which protects the utility from losing revenue as a result of encouraging energy efficiency. The DPU required ordered in 2008 that utilities adopt rate structures that promote energy conservation.
