EMC dominates storage software market

With revenue of $716 million, and nearly a 28 percent market share, Hopkinton's EMC Corp. dominated the worldwide storage software market during the fourth quarter of 2006, according to IDC, a Framingham-based research and advisory firm.

During 2006, EMC posted $2.7 billion in revenue, 1.2 percent growth over 2005.

The fourth quarter of 2006 was the 13th consecutive quarter of year-over-year growth for the storage software market, according to IDC.

Revenue for the market in the fourth quarter was $2.6 billion, a 3.1 percent increase over the fourth quarter of 2005.

For 2006 on the whole, revenues for the market were $9.8 billion, an increase of 8.3 percent over 2005, according to IDC.

But while EMC grew by 1.8 percent in the last quarter of 2006 compared to that of 2005, not all the top storage software companies did the same.

California-based Symantec, which posted the second highest revenue and market share for the quarter did so on a revenue loss of 5.3 percent, according to IDC.

Nevertheless, Symantec's performance was enough to beat out IBM, which posted $312 million in fourth quarter revenue on 10.3 percent growth.
