EMC Leads Big Growth In Disk Storage

Worldwide factory revenues from external disk storage systems grew 16.7 percent over the past year, according to Framingham technology analyst IDC.

EMC Corp. of Hopkinton saw the largest year-over-year growth of any major company for the second quarter of the year, 19.7 percent. The company's second-quarter revenue for the external disk systems was $1.1 billion, representing 21.7 percent of the market. The other major players in the sector are IBM, HP, Dell, NetApp and Hitachi.

Revenue from all types of disk storage systems grew somewhat more slowly, at 10.9 percent. HP and IBM were tied for the top spot in the market during the quarter, with about 18 percent of the market each. EMC came in next, with 15.9 percent. EMC's role in the market grew much faster than the other two companies', at 19.7 percent, compared with -1.2 percent for HP and 2.6 percent for IBM.
