Employees Squeeze More Work Into Each Day

Productivity increased at a 2.8 percent annual rate nationwide during the first quarter, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Worker output increased 4 percent while hours worked increased by 1.1 percent.

Over the year, output increased 3 percent while hours fell 3 percent, resulting in a productivity gain of 6.1 percent.

The productivity gain between the first quarter of 2009 and the same quarter this year was the largest since output per hour increased by 6.1 percent at the end of the first quarter of 2002.
