FDA Approves Tiny BSX Stent

Natick-based Boston Scientific Corp. says the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved one of the company's new drug-coated stents.

According to the company, the new stent, part of its Taxus line, is the first drug-coated stent for use in small blood vessels around the heart. The new stent can be used in vessels as small as 2.25mm in diameter, the company said.

BSX also said the FDA granted approval to the Taxus Express2 system, which treats certain conditions within bare metal stents.

Coronary stents are tiny, tube-shaped frameworks that prop open blood vessels in order to prevent blockage.
