Forecast: Central Mass. to help lead state population growth through 2035
Massachusetts' population will grow 11.8 percent from 2010 to 2035, with nearly 772,000 people added over that 25-year period and above-average growth predicted in Greater Boston, MetroWest and Central Massachusetts, according to forecasts released Wednesday.
The University of Massachusetts Donahue Institute's newly updated projections see the state's total population rising to 7,319,469 by 2035. Analysts reported recent growth rates will hold up through this year, then slow through 2035.
The study concluded that the state's older population will rise dramatically while its younger population will shrink.
Those over age 65 will account for nearly 1.68 million by 2035, almost double the current population of 902,724. The population age 19 and under is expected to fall by 57,000 and account for 21 percent of the state population by 2035, down from 25 percent.
Analysts predict Cape Cod's population will decline "if recent trends in migration, fertility and mortality continue" while western Massachusetts will see "slow growth."
