Gas prices 37 cents above last year's prices
The higher gas prices that took hold after hurricanes slammed Gulf of Mexico refineries have only fallen slightly and are hanging at an average price that is 37 cents a gallon higher than at this time last year.
AAA Northeast reported Monday that its latest weekly survey found gas averaging $2.48 a gallon in Massachusetts, the same as last week, and 22 cents higher than in late August, before Hurricane Harvey smashed into Texas.
"While prices locally have come down from the post-Harvey highs, increases in crude oil prices from OPEC production cuts along with solid demand throughout the fall have kept them from tumbling further and quicker," Mary Maguire, AAA director of public and legislative affairs, said in a statement. "We're hopeful that cheaper winter gas prices are on our door step as current demand is hitting the lowest mark since back in February."
AAA's latest survey found gas for as high as $2.79 and as low as $2.31.
On Sept. 5, AAA reported that Massachusetts gas prices exploded in the wake of Hurricane Harvey, surging 44 cents in one week to average $2.70 in the largest one-week spike since Hurricane Katrina battered the Gulf Coast in August 2005.
