GFA Federal Credit Union has purchased a property located at 35 Main St. in Ashburnham that will become its eighth branch.
The Gardner-based credit union bought the land for $450,000 from Richard A. Wright and Cindy L. Martin, trustees of the Wright-Martin Realty Trust, according to state land records. Kelli Mason, vice president of sales and service, said the credit union has wanted to open a branch in town for several years.
"We have quite a few members out there," she said. "It's kind of the one hole in the local area."
The credit union will tear down a building currently in the location and build a new one. Before making the purchase, GFA worked with town planning, zoning and historical bodies to make sure the new branch would fit in architecturally with the downtown area, Mason said.
GFA expects to open the new branch in early 2009. The building will include a cafÃ&Copy; and a community conference room, the credit union said.
GFA already has locations in Fitchburg, Gardner, Hubbardston, Rutland, Winchendon and Rindge, N.H.
