Good month for BJ's

Net sales at Natick-based BJ's Wholesale Clubs last month rose 8.2 percent over May of 2006, the company said today.

Sales in May stood at $711 million, compared with $657.4 million at the same time last year.

Year-to-date net sales at BJ's are up 7 percent compared to last year, to $2.7 billion.

Excluding sales of gasoline, the average transaction amount at BJ's locations rose by two percent in May, while overall traffic increased one percent.

BJ's Clubs in the metro New York and Mid-Atlantic regions posted the strongest sales growth, the company said. Stores in the southeastern region were the only locations not to post sales gains, due to stiffer competition.

BJ's operates 174 stores in 16 states.
