Grid favors money for nothing plan

Westborough-based National Grid has come down in favor of a proposed "decoupling" plan that would reimburse utilities for money spent on energy conservation efforts.

The plan is proposed by the state Department of Energy Resources.

Providing a new system that allows utilities to make money while providing less energy "makes profound sense," said Tom King, president of National Grid U.S. He said, "Decoupling offers a new paradigm in which we would be compensated for investing in a reliable system and encouraging our customers to use less energy." Grid encouraged the state to move quickly to "decouple rates."

The Associated Industries of Massachusetts came out against the decoupling plan Monday, and said the plan was radical and unnecessary.
