Tops in the minors

The Sports Business Journal has ranked Worcester number 52 on its most recent list of the United States' best markets for minor league sports. Fort Wayne, Ind., topped the list.

While not cracking the top 50, Worcester did make strides from the previous ranking, when it was placed at number 103.

Destination Worcester, the recently formed entity charged with drawing convention biz to the city, is looking to capitalize on the sports market through its newly formed sports advisory council. Its mission is to bring more sporting events to the region.

Members of the sports advisory council are: Richard Regan, athletic director, Holy Cross; Linda Molten, athletic director, Clark University; Ted Paulauskas, athletic director, Assumption College; Ken Kaufman, development, Becker College; Jim Moughan, assistant general manager/director of sales, DCU Center; Robert Antonelli, assistant commissioner, parks and recreation, City of Worcester; Thomas Sullivan, Lake Quinsigamond Commission, Sullivan Garrity & Donnelly Insurance Agency Inc.; Ellen Ganley, special projects assistant, economic development division, City of Worcester; Paul Cantiani, Cantiani Insurance Agency Inc.; Michael Lehr, president, Worcester Sharks; Rick Reutemann, president, Worcester Tornadoes; Roy Lucas Jr., president, New England Surge.
