HBJ Names Mantius Editor | Award-winning business journalist to head region's business paper

The Hartford Business Journal has named a veteran investigative business journalist to its top editor post.

Peter Mantius, who led the Long Island Business News and was a financial and political reporter at the Atlanta Constitution for 17 years, has been named editor of the Hartford Business Journal, effective immediately.

Mantius has been covering business since the 1980s and is a three-time Pulitzer nominee, regional first-place winner of a Society for Professional Journalists business writing award, and first-place winner of two Associated Press awards. He holds two journalism degrees: a bachelor’s degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a master’s degree from Ohio State University, where he was a Kiplinger Fellow.

In addition to a number of journalism awards, Mantius also wrote a book, “Shell Game,” which was praised in a New York Times book review as “smart, tenacious and uncompromised.” The book exposed America’s role in helping an obscure Italian bank funnel more than $4 billion to Iraq’s Saddam Hussein during the buildup to the first Gulf War.

Fresh Perspective

“We are thrilled to have Peter on board to continue our mission to make business connections in the region,” said Gail Lebert, publisher of the journal. “Peter has a deep background in journalism. Although he does not have roots in Connecticut, we believe that his fresh perspective will be welcomed by our readers.”

Mantius, 57, is a native of Long Island, N.Y., and most recently lived on an eight-acre farm in the Finger Lakes region of New York state. He recently moved into downtown Hartford and says he is excited about emerging from an early retirement to get back into the field of journalism.

“Hartford is a fantastic city. I’m lucky to be here and at the HBJ, which is full of talented people and has enormous growth potential,” Mantius said. “I look forward to beefing up the editorial staff and contributing to the overhaul of the HBJ Web site to make it more useful and lively.”

Mantius will replace Vincent M. Valvo, who left the business journal in November 2007 for a position as group publisher of the Boston-based Warren Group.

Upon Valvo’s departure, Diane Weaver Dunne has led the paper as its interim editor. She will remain at the paper as its managing editor.

“Diane’s wisdom, expertise and hard work helped carry us through this transition,” Lebert said.
