Holy Name to get wind turbine

The first major wind turbine to go up in Central Mass. in years is scheduled for completion late next year behind the windswept Alumni Field at Worcester’s Holy Name High School, thanks to a $575,000 grant from the state’s Renewable Energy Trust.

That maximum-possible grant should significantly offset the $1.6 million cost for the project, the remainder of which the Catholic diocese in Worcester plans to raise through donations.

On the whole, the geography of Central Mass. is not great for wind power, so when a project like this presented itself, the RET was happy to get on board, says Warren Leon, director of the Westboro-based trust.

The 262-foot diameter turbine is expected to generate about 0.6 Megawatts - enough energy to power about 135 homes, and more than enough to greatly offset the bills at the electrically heated school. Excess energy generated by the turbine will be pumped back into the electric grid.

Pushing the project through was a coalition of local groups - including a team of four WPI students and their professor, the school’s founding order, the Sisters of St. Anne, and Congressman James McGovern (D-Worcester) who helped arrange meetings with the RET.
