Home Sales See Uptick In August

Home sales crept up by 2 percent in August compared to the same month a year ago, according to Boston-based real estate tracker The Warren Group.

Single-family home sales hit 4,480 in August. A year ago, 4,390 single-family homes were sold. Year-to-date, home sales are down 5 percent from 2008. In July, home sales increased by 11 percent compared to a year earlier.

The median selling price for a single family home decreased by 6.2 percent to $302,625 compared to $322,500 a year ago. The median selling price has been more than $300,000 for three consecutive months.

Condo sales slid 8.3 percent in August and are down 18.2 percent year-to-date.

The Massachusetts Association of Realtors reported a 0.4 percent increase in single-family home sales for the month and a 3.5 percent decrease in condo sales.

The association includes only transactions that involve a Realtor in its statistics. It said pending home sales were up 6 percent in August and that the median single-family home price decreased 3.1 percent to $315,000.
