Household Income Fell In 2011

Median household income across the country fell 1.5 percent to $50,054 in 2011, while the poverty rate was not statistically different from the year before, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

The bureau also said the number of people without health insurance decreased, from 50 million in 2010 to 48.6 million in 2011.

The country’s poverty rate for 2011 was 15 percent, meaning 46.2 million people live in poverty.

Since 2007, the year before the recession, median household income has declined 8.1 percent. It now sits 8.9 percent below a recent high reached in 1999.

Median household income has grown 19 percent since 1967, an average of 0.4 percent per year, the bureau said.
