How Not To Get Ahead

When people are desperate for a job, they sure do some interesting things. That is, if you believe a recent survey of executives by OfficeTeam.

OfficeTeam, a staffing firm, conducted telephone interviews and asked 250 randomly selected executives about the most unusual things they've seen job candidates do to land a job - or just an interview.

Here are a few of the more noteworthy responses:

  • "I remember someone had his resume delivered in a pizza box."
  • "Someone wrote a press release announcing she had been hire and used it as her cover letter."
  • "I remember a job candidate bringing in milk and cookies."

Gimmicks aside, there are steps that the executives identified that will help a job candidate stand out - in a good way. Tips for making the right impression included taking the time to research the company prior to an interview and sending handwritten thank-you notes.
