Imprisoned former Bridgeport mayor appeals to U.S. Supreme Court

A lawyer for former Bridgeport Mayor Joseph P. Ganim has filed an appeal of his corruption conviction to the U.S. Supreme Court.

The filing has come after a federal appellate court rejected Ganim's request for a new hearing on the appeal of his conviction and nine year sentence.

"The hope is to beat the U.S. Supreme Court's June 30 deadline," attorney Peter Goldberger said Monday of the appeal filing by another Ganim lawyer, Eric P. Bloom.

Goldberger says if the U.S. Supreme Court grants Ganim's new petition both parties could spend the summer working on their legal briefs. The issues could then be argued in early 2009.

Ganim was convicted in 2003 on 16 federal corruption charges.
