Initial U.S. Unemployment Claims Down 1.7 Percent

Seasonally adjusted initial unemployment claims totaled 395,000 during the first week of August, a decline of 7,000 from the previous week's revised figure, according to the U.S. Department of Labor.

The four-week moving average, a more accurate overview of unemployment claims nationwide, was 405,000, down 3,250 from the previous week's revised average of 408,250.

Former federal civilian employees filed 3,145 initial claims during the final week of July, which was a 76 percent uptick. Meanwhile, newly discharged veterans filed 2,651 initial claims, down 46 percent from the week before.
