Judge denies special probation deal for Hartford detective

A Hartford police detective accused of tampering with evidence in a drug case is being denied a special form of probation that could have left him without a criminal record.

A judge has denied Detective Nathaniel Ortiz's request for accelerated rehabilitation. He has been suspended by the Hartford Police Department since his arrest in October 2004.

Ortiz is charged with two counts of tampering with or fabricating evidence. The judge says the charges against Ortiz are too serious to qualify for accelerated rehabilitation.

Defense lawyer Michael Georgetti says Ortiz asked for the special probation because his former supervisor, Franco Sanzo, a co-defendant in the case, was granted accelerated rehabilitation by another judge.
