Keeping The Kids In Mind

If there’s anything that disadvantaged kids need, it’s a role model. When these kids go to programs at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Hartford, there’s one waiting for them. Her name is Tauheedah Muhammad and she is the new director of operations for the organization.

“This was the most logical step for me in moving forward,” she said. “I wanted to continue working in the same field but in a different arena.”

Muhammad, 29, grew up in Bridgeport where she graduated from Central High School in 1996. She received her bachelor’s degree in government and secondary education from Connecticut College in 2000. It was then that she decided to weigh her options.

“I was thinking of going to law school or teaching but I started a job as education director at the Boys & Girls Club in Bristol,” Muhammad said. “I just stayed with it.”

Muhammad was responsible for educational and technology programming for two years. She considered the experience similar to teaching, but with more freedom.

“I was just enjoying my job and appreciated the fact that the organization kept me connected with training and professional development,” Muhammad said.

In 2004 she moved to the Hartford office and became education and technology programming director after a stint as unit director in Bristol. Later, she took the reins as unit director at the organization’s Trinity location, and again extended her experience in guiding programming for kids.

The Meriden resident has easily stepped into the position left open from Sam Grey’s promotion to executive director.

“I’m motivated to working with other youth development professionals and I see the room for growth and opportunity this presents to kids and employees,” Muhammad said. “It’s exciting to be a part of that.”

Muhammad’s new position requires that she manages the 10 sites of Hartford in terms of budgets, grant management and making visits to manage the staff, making contacts for partnerships and bringing in resources and programs to the community.

“I want the organization to be able to serve more kids and do a lot every day to provide [for] their needs,” she said.

Muhammad’s long-term goal is to work in the organization’s national office, doing curriculum development for Boys & Girls Clubs of America.

“I’ll see where the next steps take me but I’d love to be able to implement what I do now,” she said.
