Late '06 hiring climbs in Mass.

Employers in Massachusetts posted 92,640 job openings during the fourth quarter of 2006, a 25 percent increase from the same quarter the previous year, according to results of the state Office of Labor and Workforce Development's latest job vacancy survey.

According to the department, job postings increased most in the biotech, IT, health care and finance industries, and increased in 16 of the state's 20 major industries overall.

Manager and professional positions had the most job vacancies for the last quarter of 2006, and accounted for 37 percent of all job postings during that period, the department said.

The department said demand rose fastest for engineers and IT workers.
