Manufacturing shows second-quarter strength

Economic activity in the manufacturing sector expanded in June for the fifth consecutive month, and the overall economy grew for the 68th consecutive month, according to the manufacturing executive who put together the Manufacturing Institute for Supply Management Report on Business.

The institute said the Purchasing Manager's Index is currently at 56.

Following a weak first quarter, the manufacturing sector rebounded in the second quarter, the institute reported. In June, manufacturing expanded at its fastest pace since April 2006 when the PMI Index registered 56.9.

The institute said the second quarter performance could continue in the third quarter due to current strength in new orders and production.

High-performing sectors with a presence in Massachusetts include plastics and computer and electronics products.
