Mass. Employers Stuck In Neutral

Massachusetts employers were neither confident nor pessimistic about the economy in June, according to the Associated Industries of Massachusetts Business Confidence Index.

The index came in at 48.9 for June, a half-point below its May reading. AIM said manufacturers were less confident than other employers and registered a 47.4 reading on the June index despite strong export sales that take advantage of the currently weak U.S. dollar.

A reading of 50 is considered neutral on the index's 100-point scale. The index has been neutral since January, when it hit 50.6. The index hit its low for the year in March, when it registered a 47.4.

AIM said the index's decline since the beginning of the year has been minor and respondents to the survey upon which AIM bases the index have been more optimistic about the next six months.

AIM said "economic diversity" has helped companies in Massachusetts cope with the flagging economy better than those in other states.
