Waltham-based Thermo Fisher Scientific has acquired Open Biosystems Inc., an Alabama-based RNAi products manufacturer.
Open Biosystems, which was founded in 2001, makes research laboratory tools designed for RNAi research. It specializes in systems that deliver specific types of RNA into human cells. The company also makes products for DNA and other gene research.
Terms of the Thermo Fisher acquisition were not disclosed. RNAi seeks to stop diseases by "silencing" the genes thought to be responsible for those diseases.
The process was discovered by University of Massachusetts Medical School researcher Craig Mello, head of the Worcester-based pharmaceutical company RXi.
Thermo Fisher, which has operations in Worcester, Franklin and Milford as well as several locations around Boston, said the acquisition significantly expands the company's presence in the RNAi field. The company has more than 30,000 employees in numerous divisions around the world.
