Mass. the sixth largest "cyberstate"

A new survey released by Woburn-based American Electronics Association said Massachusetts gained 4,300 technology industry jobs in 2006.

The survey ranks the Commonwealth as the sixth largest "cyberstate" in the country.

The 4,300 tech jobs added in 2006 is a 2 percent gain over the previous year, AeA said.

Tech workers account for 237,500 jobs in Massachusetts, with a payroll of about $21.3 billion, according to the survey. Massachusetts also has the highest concentration of tech workers in the country, with 86 of every 1,000 private sector workers employed by high-tech industries.

The average pay for a high-tech workers in Massachusetts is $89,700, 78 percent more than the average private sector worker, the survey concluded.

The telecommunications sector saw a decline of 1,300 jobs during the year, the survey said. But those losses were offset by gains in research and development, computer systems design, and software.
