The Massachusetts Port Authority has approved a 26-percent increase in spending for Worcester Regional Airport as it prepares to restart commercial passenger service later this year.
The Worcester facility will operate with a budget of $6.8 million for the 2014 fiscal year, which begins July 1. That represents a $1.4-million jump from the current fiscal year, one that did not have commercial passenger flights.
Commercial traffic was halted in March 2012 after DirectAir stopped flying and was later ordered into Chapter 7 bankruptcy. But commercial flights will resume in November after JetBlue announced it will have daily flights from Worcester to Fort Lauderdale and Orlando.
MassPort said the budget increase for the Worcester airport will allow it to add seven new employees to accommodate the launch of the JetBlue service. They will include five safety and security officers, an airfield utility foreperson and a part-time custodian, according to MassPort spokesman Richard Walsh.
