Middlesex Savings Charitable Foundation, the charity arm of Natick-based Middlesex Savings Bank, marked its 25th anniversary by awarding $5,000 grants to 50 nonprofits, totaling $250,000.
The grants were given to a diverse group of organizations, focusing on food insecurity, domestic violence, and veterans, among other causes. Out of the 50 participants, 38 organizations including Friendly House, Inc., and Centro, Inc., both located in Worcester, are focused on food insecurity, according to Courtney O’Regan, director of marketing for Middlesex Savings Bank.
"We've been supporting food pantries for 25 years right now, and one of the things that we've learned with the donations is summer months are particularly challenging for them, so donations typically drop off when families with school aged children need help the most,” Mike Kuza, president of Middlesex Savings Charitable Foundation, said.
Grant recipient organizations are located all across Central and Eastern Massachusetts, including six in Worcester.
"It's not about picking trendy causes, it's more about listening to what communities actually need and responding thoughtfully," Kuna said.
Middlesex Savings Charitable Foundation has contributed over $17 million to local organizations which serve the community over the course of 25 years.
