MWCC begins testing bio-powered system

Mount Wachusett Community College in Gardner has launched a one-year test of its bio-powered micro-cooling, heating and power system, helping to supply 50 kilowatts of electricity, 80 kilowatts of heat, and at least six tons of thermally activated cooling for the school's Gardner campus.

The BioMax system's installation is the result of a collaborative effort between the device's manufacturer, Community Power Systems of Colorado, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, the USDA Forest Service, and MWCC.  The project is funded by a $1 million grant from the US Dept. of Energy.

The goal of the initiative is to determine the effectiveness and technical and economical viability of this type of biomass system as well as raising awareness to using small modular bio-power as an energy source.

The BioMax uses woodchips as its primary source of energy, and powers a GM gasoline engine and generator.  The emissions released by the BioMax meet California's emissions regulations.
