National Grid Plans To Add 300 Mass. Jobs

A new five-year contract between Westborough-based utility National Grid and a joint venture company called New Energy Alliance is projected to bring 300 jobs to Massachusetts.

The contract is for an initial five years and includes approximately $700 million in projects. The entire contract is expected to create more than 500 jobs throughout New England.

NEA is a joint venture company between U.K.-based Balfour Beatty Infrastructure Inc., which has its U.S. headquarters in Texas, and Michigan-based MJ Electric, a Quanta Services company, which is based in Texas.

The region's electric transmission system needs to be replaced because it is nearing the end of its lifespan, according to company officials.

"This contract will make sure the backbone of our electricity transmission network will deliver reliable supplies to our customers for years to come," said Masheed Saidi, National Grid's executive vice president and chief operating office for its U.S. Transmission, in a prepared statement.

The contract is one of two that will deliver around $1.7 billion toward National Grid's transmission investment program over the next five years, according to the company. Another contract will cover National Grid's network mostly in upstate New York.

National Grid USA is a subsidiary of National Grid plc of the United Kingdom.
