Need For Speed

Karen Chapman, Corridor Nine.

Let's be honest. Speed networking can be intimidating. After all, who likes meeting strangers?

But with just a little preparation, you can turn an awkward conversation into a business-generating lead, according to Karen Chapman, vice president of the Corridor Nine Chamber of Commerce. Corridor Nine is hosting a speed networking event from 7:15 to 9 a.m. on Thursday, April 23 at the DoubleTree Inn, 5400 Computer Drive in Westborough.

"Practice your pitch so you stay within the time limit, although we have a moderator that keeps everyone on track. Make sure you tell people what sets you apart from your competitors and end with a tagline that makes them remember you," Chapman said.

Speed networking is just like it sounds: You get to meet a number of people quickly. At Corridor Nine's event there are three rounds of meet and greets. Three tables of 10 people each have a minute to exchange their one-minute descriptions of their businesses and exchange business cards, before moving on to the next tables.

"It's definitely fun and fast-paced," Chapman said. People are assigned to groups randomly so there's no chance of clinging to a friend or co-worker.

The moderator may also lighten things up by asking participants to share what their favorite movies are, or to name their favorite superhero. Those personal details "may help people remember you and help make a connection," Chapman said.

If you're ready to jump into the networking deep end, make sure you sign up with the Chamber by April 21. The cost is $25 for chamber members and $50 for non-members. Registration is required and can be done at http://www.corridornine.org/register.php.
