After receiving licensing approvals in February, a Brazilian-style pizza restaurant is opening at the former Helfand’s Deli site in Worcester on Tuesday.
Bella Pizzeria, which has an existing location in Milford, will serve items including pizza, burgers, and esfihas, which are small pies containing either savory or sweet fillings, said Bella Owner Patrick Joseph. The restaurant is located at 143 Highland St., near other established eateries including The Sole Proprietor and The Boynton Restaurant & Spirits.
Pizza dough and bread for burgers and sandwiches will be made fresh on site. Joseph said the restaurant’s opening took longer than expected due to the need to fix up the site, but that he’s excited to open a location in the city.
“I would say it's the population as a whole, even though there are a lot of Brazilians here in Worcester,” Joseph said of his reason behind opening a Worcester location. “The location is much bigger in size than Milford, too.”
He’s hopeful the restaurant will appeal to students at nearby colleges like Worcester Polytechnic Institute when they return for classes after summer break.
Bella Pizzeria will open its doors for the first time at 6 p.m. on Tuesday. The restaurant plans on operating six days a week from noon to 10:30 p.m. and be closed on Mondays.
The pizzeria replaces Helfand’s Deli, which closed in March 2024. The property was purchased by CG Partners Realty One LLC, an entity based in Boston managed by Dennis Clair of Boston and Angelo Giankais of Wellesley, in August.
Before Helfand’s, 143 Highland St. was the location of the Sahara Restaurant from the late 1990s until December 2021.
