New Titles At Milford Regional

Med. center undergoes reorganization, eyes expansion to Franklin

Frank Saba dropped the president from his title. Now heˆ’s just CEO of Milford Regional Medical Center.
A recent executive reorganization at Milford Regional Medical Center aims at freeing up CEO Francis M. Saba to focus on long-term goals at the hospital, including expansion at its Milford plant and the possibility of opening a new facility in Franklin.

Francis M. Saba, long-time president and CEO of the MRMC health care system, which includes the medical center, its affiliated physician practice group Tri-County Medical Associates and the Milford Regional Healthcare Foundation, will now serve solely as CEO of the corporation.

Edward J. Kelly, former executive vice president and chief financial officer for Milford Regional, will now serve as president of the medical center. The new CFO is Jeanne Lynskey, former director of fiscal operations at the hospital.

The changes, contemplated for several years, Saba said, were effective Jan. 1.

In his new role as corporate CEO, Saba said he will be able to focus more exclusively on developing relationships outside of the hospital that will allow all three entities to grow.

Some of the long-term efforts Saba said he would focus on included planning for an expansion of the hospital's capacity; the potential construction of a facility in Franklin, one of the biggest towns in MRMC's coverage area; and the development of new IT systems to help the whole organization manage new pay-for-performance health insurance practices.

Edward J. Kelly, formerly executive vice president and CFO, is now president.
Hospital Horsepower

"We felt it was a good idea to focus my efforts on external matters, and to start planning for the long-term by working on recruitment, developing affiliations, fundraising and governmental relations," Saba said. "Ed freeing me up to do that by taking over the hospital is a huge help."

Kelly agreed, and said the corporate shakeup gave the whole organization "a little more horsepower" to help accomplish longer-term goals.

"Lately, we've been so project intense here, and what happens is you become very task oriented. You can only do so much in a day," Kelly said. "If you have to cut something out, you generally cheat on where you get out to see people and the longer term planning, the stuff not right in front of you."

The hospital recently opened a $25 million, 54,000-square-foot cancer center, in partnership with Dana Farber Cancer Institute and Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston.

Kelly said Saba will also focus on recruiting physicians to both MRMC and the region in general. More than just interviewing doctors and offering them jobs, Kelly said, recruitment nowadays means having interesting and innovative programs and facilities for those doctors to work in.

Saba also said he is looking into recruiting a new vice president of philanthropy as part of an effort to increase fundraising efforts for, and within, the community at large.

Kelly said his prior role as CFO for the hospital will serve him well in his new position, one he is looking forward to.

"More people with a financial background have moved into administrative roles in hospitals, just because of the complexity of the systems," Kelly said. "It is a trend we're seeing in the industry."
