Perez house searched in investigation

The Chief State's Attorney's Office is conducting an investigation on Hartford Mayor Eddie Perez for retaining a city contractor to work on home improvements. In a statement released this afternoon, Perez admitted that investigators had searched his Bloomfield Avenue home on Tuesday, and that he had turned over cancelled checks and records to investigators.

Carlos Costa, a "lifelong friend" of Perez and a contractor who was awarded work on Park Place streetscape improvements in 2003, had also done remodeling of the mayor's bathroom and kitchen starting in 2005. According to the statement, Costa didn't take out the proper building permits for the work.

"Even though Mr. Costa was paid in full for the work he performed, it was a mistake on my part to retain a city contractor to perform work at my house," Perez said in a statement. Perez also said he took responsibility for Costa's failure to get the right permits.
